Girl, 12, approached by skinny man in Dewsbury

Police are appealing for information following a suspicious incident involving a 12-year-old girl in Dewsbury today.

The girl was on Russell Street at just after 2pm when she was approached by a man in a black van.

The girl screamed and kicked him, causing the man to let her go. The man then drove off in the vehicle.

The man is described as Asian, skinny and in his 30s.

He was wearing all black clothing, including a black hoodie and black jeans.

He was seen driving a black panel van away from the area.

Officers have attended the area in Dewsbury and enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances of the incident.

Detective Inspector Mark Walker, of Kirklees District CID, said: “While we understand that this incident may cause some concern in the wider community, we would stress that this appears to be an isolated incident and the motives behind this man’s actions are unclear.

“We would urge anyone who has witnessed this incident, saw this man in the area and saw anything suspicious which could help our ongoing enquiries to please call Kirklees CID via 101 quoting log number 878 of 21/2.”

Amber weather warning as Storm Doris to hit Huddersfield

A weather warning has been issued as Storm Doris is set to head to the North later this week.

The Met Office have issued the amber weather warning for Yorkshire for Thursday, starting at 6am until 6pm the same day.

Some areas could see gusts of up to 80mph. The Met Office said: “Some very strong winds are expected throughout Thursday in association with storm ‘Doris’, with a short period where gusts of 70 to 80 mph are possible.

“Whilst the strongest winds look to be only short-lived, damage to structures, interruptions to power supplies and widespread disruption to travel networks are likely, with a danger of injury from flying debris. Heavy rain is also likely through Thursday as well as some snow over high ground as the system clears eastwards. These may prove additional hazards.”

Local academic calculates Hollywood gender pay gap

A Huddersfield academic claims she has laid the facts bare on the Hollywood gender pay gap.

While A-listers like Jenifer Lawrence and Meryl Streep campaign for equal pay in Tinseltown, University researcher Dr Sophia Izquierdo-Sanchez has been conducting detailed research into and found that on average, female actors earn $2m dollars less than their male co-stars.

She claims this can be explained by men being more likely to be cast in high-profile roles in the biggest blockbusters, such as actions and thrillers. But Dr Sophia has also calculated that when all observable differences between male and female actors are accounted for, there is still a 55 per cent disparity, leading to a gender pay gap caused by what she has called “Hollywood sexism”.

Government urged to improve northern rail links to airports

Manchester Airport boss Ken O’Toole has told a Northern Powerhouse conference this morning that the Government must improve rail links in the north.

Mr O’Toole, chief executive of the airport, has urged ministers at the conference in Manchester to back the Northern Powerhouse Rail scheme (also known as the HS3 scheme), which would improve connections between towns and cities and local major airports.

He said: “It should be as easy as possible to travel from Hull to Hong Kong; Liverpool to Los Angeles and Sheffield to Singapore.”

Medallist Marcus Ellis faces funding cuts ahead of 2020 Olympics

It’s bad news for Huddersfield’s Olympic medallist Marcus Ellis, after it’s been announced that funding would be axed for Olympic badminton for the Tokyo 2020 games.

The sport is one of several which will receive no funding for the next games as they are not deemed strong contenders for gold medals.

Marcus, from Bolster Moor, brought home the bronze after winning alongside team mate Chris Langridge in Rio last August. The news came last night that GB Badminton had lost the appeal to have the funding reinstated, which could jeopardise the future of the sport.

Other sports to have their funding axed include archery, goalball, fencing, table tennis, wheelchair rugby and weightlifting, the latter of which has reportedly left West Yorkshire’s Olympic weightlifter Rebekah Tiler “devastated”.
