Duchess of Cornwall launches The Great Get Together

Jo Cox’s husband Brendan has visited Clarence House today as the Duchess of Cornwall helps launch plans for the Great Get Together - and has said he is glad he didn’t invite his two children in case they destroyed any antiques.

Camilla is the official patron of The Big Lunch and has launched the event to commemorate Jo this afternoon.

Addressing the room: Mr Cox said: “looking around at all the ornaments I am very glad I didn’t [bring the children].

“It would be a stressful hour of my life running around trying to avoid them destroying a Ming vase or something.”

The Great Get Together will be an event people can sign up to and organise street parties and barbeques over the weekend of June 17 and 18 - just over a year since Jo’s death.

Petition wins bid to save restaurant's light-up palm trees

A petition to save the palm trees at Shama Restaurant in Heckmondwike has won its campaign.

Kirklees Council have told campaigners that the Indian eaterie’s trees can stay...for now.

The glow-in-the-dark trees have been described as a “ray of sunshine into a boring daily commute from Spen into Leeds”. The Council had proposed to fell them as they were not seen as “subtle features”, but have told residents they will not be taking action.

They do, however, reserve the right to proceed with their plans in the future. Is the future sunny for Shama’s palms?

Boost five a day to ten a day, scientists urge

Here’s something juicy to get your teeth around this lunchtime - scientist are now saying TEN portions of fruit and veg a day could “significantly reduce risk of disease and cancer”.

While your five a day still keeps you healthy and protects against diseases (Haribo Strawbs don’t count, by the way), the highest benefits are seen when people consume 10 portions, research has suggested today.

The research, published in the International Journal of Epidemiology, identified apples, pears, citrus fruits, salads and green leafy vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower as the best stuff to prevent heart disease, stroke, cardiovascular disease and early death.

Cancer risks could also be slashed by eating green and yellow veg such as spinach and peppers.

Protests over trees being cut at Moor End Academy

We’ve been hearing this morning how trees are being felled at Moor End Academy in Crosland Moor where there are plans to build a new school.

The site has been earmarked for another primary school, Beaumont Primary Academy, and the trees are supposedly being cut down for a car park - the problem is planning is yet to be approved.

Local resident Andrew Walker even attempted to halt the cutting of trees this morning by sitting on a threatened mature tree, while members of Dryclough Woodside Residents Group (DWARG) have written to Moor End Academy Trust today to request a stop to this work.

We have contacted Kirklees over this and are waiting on an update.

Weatherman warns Huddersfield motorists over Storm Doris

Weatherman Paul Stevens has warned commuters to prepare for “explosive” winds around rush hour tomorrow as Storm Doris hits Huddersfield.

Doris is set to get going shortly after 3am and will supposedly reach its peak between 8-10am. Motorists should take care on high, exposed roads or roads between hills where wind could be funnelled.

Paul said: “It’s going to develop explosively - the depression is what we call an explosive cyclone genesis. The biggest worry is when it crosses just to the north of Huddersfield - we will see the odd tree falling, bins being knocked over and possibly lorries being blown over.

“The worst of it should die down by lunchtime.”

Gyms urged to intervene on steroid use

Regular gym-goer? Then there’s a good chance your local club may be asked to provide more information on steroid use.

That’s according to reports this morning that health officials are urging gyms to help tackle drug misuse by providing more information to anyone considering taking performance enhancers.

Guidelines from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) state that gyms have a responsibility to “target people who are taking, or considering taking, image- and performance-enhancing drugs”.

Professor David Croisdale-Appleby, chair of the guideline committee, said: “Raising awareness about drug use and giving clear information about their potentially devastating effects, along with practical advice, will help contribute to the wider issues of preventing drug misuse.”

Event to commemorate Jo Cox launched today

A national event to commemorate Batley & Spen MP Jo Cox will be launched by the Duchess of Cornwall and Jamie Oliver today.

The #GreatGetTogether has been organised by Jo’s widower Brendan Cox and her family, and will be held as a series of street parties and picnics in communities across the UK on the anniversary of her death in June.

Brendan said there would be “no more fitting tribute” to Jo than bringing communities together. He said: “Jo loved a party and she would have been thrilled by the idea of The Great Get Together.

“As she said in her maiden speech in Parliament - we have far more in common than that which divides us.”

Further details will be announced later today.
