Petition wins bid to save restaurant's light-up palm trees
A petition to save the palm trees at Shama Restaurant in Heckmondwike has won its campaign.
Kirklees Council have told campaigners that the Indian eaterie’s trees can stay...for now.
The glow-in-the-dark trees have been described as a “ray of sunshine into a boring daily commute from Spen into Leeds”. The Council had proposed to fell them as they were not seen as “subtle features”, but have told residents they will not be taking action.
They do, however, reserve the right to proceed with their plans in the future. Is the future sunny for Shama’s palms?
Boost five a day to ten a day, scientists urge
Here’s something juicy to get your teeth around this lunchtime - scientist are now saying TEN portions of fruit and veg a day could “significantly reduce risk of disease and cancer”.
While your five a day still keeps you healthy and protects against diseases (Haribo Strawbs don’t count, by the way), the highest benefits are seen when people consume 10 portions, research has suggested today.
The research, published in the International Journal of Epidemiology, identified apples, pears, citrus fruits, salads and green leafy vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower as the best stuff to prevent heart disease, stroke, cardiovascular disease and early death.
Cancer risks could also be slashed by eating green and yellow veg such as spinach and peppers.

Doris is set to get going shortly after 3am and will supposedly reach its peak between 8-10am. Motorists should take care on high, exposed roads or roads between hills where wind could be funnelled.
Paul said: “It’s going to develop explosively - the depression is what we call an explosive cyclone genesis. The biggest worry is when it crosses just to the north of Huddersfield - we will see the odd tree falling, bins being knocked over and possibly lorries being blown over.
“The worst of it should die down by lunchtime.”
