Regional: Child rapist jailed thanks to police efforts

Police have helped jail a child rapist after flying to Romania to seek out his victim.

Tariq Syed, 64, was jailed at Bradford Crown Court after police efforts in bringing him to justice.

The rape of the schoolgirl was reported to police in September 2014 and Syed was arrested but initially denied the offence and was bailed.

The victim and her family later left the country to Romania, shortly before the trial was due to take place. Detective Constable Charlotte Grose and Detective Sergeant Amanda Middleton flew out to the country to make sure arrangements were in place for them to give evidence via a video link.

The trial began in February and yesterday Syed was convicted and sentenced for the rape and perverting the course of justice.

Syed, of Bradford, was jailed for 13 years for the offences.

Tracy asks PM to apologise for damage caused by Government-administered jab

Tracy Brabin has now called on the Prime Minister to apologise after she refused to promise that families of children suffering side effects from vaccinations will not have to face expensive court battles.

The Pandemrix vaccine was issued to schoolchildren by the Government to prevent swine flu seven years ago.

It comes after a Batley & Spen constituent and mother of a victim sat in the public gallery of the House of Commons as Tracy asked: “I have just come from a Westminster Hall debate on behalf of my 11 year old constituent Sam who developed narcolepsy as a result of receiving the Pandemrix Vaccine to protect him from Swine Flu. Will the Prime Minister Today promise that no more of these disabled children will be hounded through the courts, apologise to the families involved and oversee payments to support the children’s long term care needs?”

Funding announced for social care and A&E departments

The social care sector is to receive an extra £2bn over the next three years, the Chancellor has announced.

The extra funding will mean pressure will ease on the NHS, according to Phillip Hammond.

He admitted in the House of Commons that the social care system is “clearly under pressure”. An extra £1m has been announced for projects that will place GPs in hospitals to reduce pressures on A&E departments following the crises in departments across the country over the winter.

Residents urged to keep eyes peeled for rare bird

Have you spotted one of these birds recently?

The RSPB is calling on eagle-eyed members of the public who may have seen a hen harrier in Yorkshire.

Hen harriers of one of the country’s rarest birds of prey, and bird watchers are being asked to keep their eyes peeled.

At this time of year, the male hen harrier performs his courtship display known as skydancing, involving a spectacular series of swoops and somersaults. If he is fortunate enough to attract a female, he then proves his worth as a mate by passing her food offerings in mid-air. Sounds a bit more complex than swiping right on Tinder...

Man rescued after being trapped in house fire

Fire services attended a house fire on Lower Fitzwilliam Street last night after a man was trapped in his basement by the fire.

Crews from Huddersfield, Rastrick and Dewsbury attended after neighbours heard the smoke alarm and raised the alarm at around 10.30pm. The man, in his forties, was found on the cellar steps and given medical treatment at the scene, although refused to attend hospital for further treatment despite having suffered smoke inhalation.

Damage was caused to furnishings inside the cellar, although luckily there was no structural damage due to the basement having stone walls. A fire investigation team will be investigating the cause of the blaze today.

Watch Commander Robin Ferguson, from Huddersfield Fire Station, said the fire is thought to have started in the basement. A West Yorkshire Police spokesperson also confirmed they attended the scene near to the junction with Leeds Road last night.

Nobody in the adjoining properties was injured.
