Documentary on Saddleworth Moor death to be screened tonight

Channel 4 will screen a documentary on the investigation into the man found dead on Saddleworth Moor more than one yea ago.

David Lytton was found near Dovestones Reservoir in December 2015, with police unable to identify him until January this year. A feature named The Man On The Moor will be screened at 10pm tonight detailing the 13-month investigation, which even took officers to Pakistan, in a bid to put a name to the man’s body.

An inquest yesterday afternoon ruled an open verdict, with the coroner saying questions remained unanswered as to why Mr Lytton travelled from London to Saddleworth to spend his final moments.

Huddersfield professor reveals state of inequality among children in UK

A Huddersfield academic has been working on a national report which has revealed shocking inequalities among children in the UK.

Prof Brid Featherstone, who lectures in social care at the University, claims that children from the most deprived 10% of society are 10 times more likely to be placed in social care.

The Child Welfare Inequalities Project also revealed that one in 60 children from deprived neighbourhoods are in care, compared to 660 from better off backgrounds.

A race difference was also revealed, with children from deprived backgrounds more likely to be in care if they were white than if they were Asian or black.

Inquest hears questions remain "unanswered" into death on Saddleworth Moor

An inquest into the mysterious death of a man on Saddleworth Moor yesterday afternoon has failed to shed light on why he came here from London to die.

David Lytton’s body was found near Dovestone Reservoir in December 2015, but wasn’t identified until ealier this year. Pathologists told the hearing in Greater Manchester yesterday that he was poisoned by strychnine, an empty bottle of which was found on him and discovered to be administered in Pakistan.

Heywood Coroners Court heard Mr Lytton, 67, had arrived back in the UK after 10 years in Pakistan two days prior to his death, before catching a train to Greenfield and later dying on the moors.

The hearing yesterday concluded an open verdict into Mr Lytton’s death, and coroner Simon Nelson said he could not be sure of Mr Lytton’s “intention”, adding a series of “fundamental questions remain unanswered”.
