Man jailed for part in fatal horror crash

A Dewsbury man has been jailed for 42 weeks after encouraging dangerous driving in a West Yorkshire horror crash that killed four young people.

Andrew Kirkwood, 33, pleaded guilty to the encouragement of dangerous driving as a man was given nine years for the crash near Hemsworth that killed Ryan Beal, Brandon Brown, Alexandra Binns and Terrie Louise Kirbie.

The four, aged between 20 and 16, were killed after the quad bike they were travelling on was struck by 24-year-old Daniel Raynor, from Barnsley, who was driving a Nissan sports car at 140mph in a 60 zone in September 2015.

Raynor and Matthew Todd, 23, were sentenced today at Leeds Crown Court after pleading guilty to four counts of death by dangerous driving. Ten other men, including Kirkwood, were also sentenced after being convicted of encouraging dangerous driving.

Det Insp Richard Holmes, of the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, said: “For so many young lives to be lost in a single incident was truly shocking and it is no exaggeration to say that police officers who dealt with this case have been seriously affected by what they saw and experienced.”
