Summer Wine creator pays tribute to Peter Sallis

The creator of Holmfirth’s most famous export Last of the Summer Wine has paid tribute to its biggest star.

Peter Sallis, who played Cleggy in the comedy, died yesterday. Creator Roy Clarke has told BBC Leeds that he knew Mr Sallis was perfect for the role after working with him in a play.

He said: “The kind of parts he played, there was a lot of Norman Clegg in Peter Sallis. I liked his style - it was there as a man as well as a performer. I think he was unique. If you’re looking for a James Bond there’s lots of options but if you’re looking for trying to cast a Peter Sallis, where would you go? Only one.”
