Re-trial for Honley murder-accused

Two men accused of murdering Honley man Darren Moorhouse during a disturbance at a property in Halifax are to face a retrial after a jury failed to reach any verdicts.

The 49-year-old died after suffering a single stab wound to the heart during a violent incident at a property in Athol Close, Ovenden, in January.

A jury at Bradford Crown Court was told that 26-year-old Buxton man Dale Dwyer was responsible for the fatal stabbing, but both he and his co-accused Christopher Churchill, 34, denied the murder charge during a two-week trial.

Holiday makers slow start at EU check-ins

Airport passengers have queued for up to four hours at airports this week, with some EU states criticised for not bringing in extra staff.

The new rules have been introduced following terror attacks in Paris and Brussels.

EU countries have to carry out more stringent checks on passengers who are entering or leaving the Schengen area, which lets people move through much of the bloc passport-free.

Travellers’ details now have to be run through databases to see if they pose a threat.

ACETA, the association of Spanish air transport companies, said that, since 24 July, around 1,000 passengers had missed their flights.

Student poll reveals trends are changing

Would-be university students today are more likely to see themselves spending time in the library rather than the bar, according to a poll.

While almost three in 10 (29%) of sixth-formers are most looking forward to studying a subject they are passionate about, less than one in 10 (9.1%) said the thing they are most excited about at university is the nightlife.

The poll, by Leeds Beckett University, also shows around a fifth (19.6%) say the thing they are most looking forward to at university is progressing their career. Students in England now pay up to £9,250 per year in tuition fees, and there have been some suggestions that undergraduates are becoming more focused on the benefits of having a good degree, as well as gaining value for money from their university experience.

Looks like Greenhead Park has a new attraction for younger visitors!

This horse was spotted at the park this morning, enjoying the plentiful grass the park has to offer.

No doubt it will be escorted from the park at some point this morning when the animals owner is located.
