Man admits murder of Jessica King

A man has pleaded guilty to murdering a young mother in Calderdale.

Jessica King, a mum of two, was killed at her home in Oxford Lane in Siddal, Halifax, in August. Jordan Thackray, 27, of Leeds, has today admitted murder at Bradford Crown Court. He had previously denied killing the 23-year-old and was due to stand trial in May next year.

Today Thackray was brought into the dock and his barrister Paul Greaney QC explained that in late November his client had prepared a note in which he provided a full explanation of the events that resulted in Miss King’s death.

He said: “I can tell your honour that in the note he takes full responsibility for the death of Jessica. He expresses remorse and moreover in it he expresses a strong desire to plead guilty to murder.”

The Crown Prosecution Service will not bring charges against two further suspects referred by the IPCC following an investigation into the Hillsborough disaster, it has announced. The police watchdog had submitted files relating to a South Yorkshire Police mounted officer and a farrier contracted to work for the force, following allegations about falsified evidence relating to a police horse being injured outside the stadium. Six men, including match commander David Duckenfield, are already facing prosecution for alleged offences related to the 1989 disaster and its aftermath.

BBC APPOINTS FRAN UNSWORTH AS DIRECTOR OF NEWS AND CURRENT AFFAIRS
The BBC has appointed Fran Unsworth to the role of director of news and current affairs, one of the “most demanding” jobs in broadcasting. It is understood that Unsworth’s salary will be the same as that of her predecessor James Harding, who announced in October that he was leaving his £340,000 a year post. Unsworth is currently director of the BBC World Service Group and deputy director of news and current affairs at the broadcaster.
