A 77-year-old man was killed after his car crashed after he collapsed at the wheel and his passenger tried desperately to stop it.

The Liversedge man was driving south on the M1 when he was taken ill at the wheel close to junction 33 near Rotherham at 11am on Saturday.

This led him to press down the accelerator on his Nissan Almera Tino and the car hit the nearside crash barrier.

His female passenger then put on the handbrake. The car slid across the carriageway, hit the central barrier, overturned then came to a halt.

The driver sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on arrival at Rotherham District General Hospital.

His 72-year-old female passenger, also from Liversedge, suffered slight bruising and was treated in the same hospital and released.

The couple were travelling to Tamworth in Staffordshire when the tragedy happened.

South Yorkshire Police are appealing for information.
