CHILDREN put their lives at risk when they set fire to rubbish in an underground tunnel, a fire spokesman warned.

Smoke poured from a banking behind Armitage Bridge Industrial Park Mills, Bankfoot and seeped into the nearby North Light art gallery.

Leading firefighter Richard Carr, of Huddersfield fire station, said the tunnel led to the bottom of a an old chimney.

He said: "It was very dark in there and we had to send in firefighters wearing breathing apparatus to find the blaze, which turned out to be rubbish.

"We believe the fire had been started by children. They are putting their lives in terrible danger.

"The tunnel is a confined space and if they were overcome by the smoke or became trapped, they could die."
