Familiar faces return to Kirklees Council.

With 24 seats in 23 wards up for grabs, it saw the return of existing councillors

Clr Hilary Richards retained the Golcar seat for Labour, saying: “I only had a 100 majority coming in so you never know what will happen. But I am absolutely delighted that so many people voted for me.

“I hope it is because I have always been honest with people, even if I felt it was something they didn’t want to hear, because honesty is the best way.”

Clr Donna Bellamy retained the Colne Valley seat for the Conservatives and she said: “It feels fantastic. I knew it was going to be close but I remained positive.

“I think the General Election on the same day may have helped. You never know if national issues will affect a local vote, but it’s been obvious campaigning with Jason McCartney that there was a good response.”

Valley Independent Clr Edgar Holroyd-Doveton retained his Holme Valley North seat and said: “I feel pleased to have been re-elected and that the ward continues to support an independent way of thinking.

“I felt at times it as a David and Goliath battle – the goliath was a party machine with professional leaflets and teams of canvassers and I had my home printer and myself.”

Clr Ken Sims returned to Holme Valley South as a Conservative member and said: “I forget how long it’s been now, but I’m never complacent.

“It’s my job to campaign for Kirklees to get a good deal and then for me in Kirklees to make sure my ward gets a good deal and I’ll do my best with that.”
