UNEMPLOYMENT in Huddersfield and neighbouring areas is rising, despite UK statistics falling to a near 30-year low in January.

The Government's national figures showed 892,100 claiming unemployment- related benefit in January - 13,400 fewer than in the previous month.

Total unemployment fell by 21,000 to 1,459,000 in the three months to December.

But the jobless tally rose by 63 to 1,830 in Huddersfield last month. The figure for Colne Valley was up by 73 to 1,186 with Dewsbury 94 higher at 1,063 and Wakefield 102 up at 1,586.
