A NEW scheme for Good Samaritans to rid their communities of graffiti has been launched.

Under Kirklees Council plans Neighbourhood Watch groups will be armed with anti-graffiti kits to wipe away unwanted daubings.

At the council's Colne Valley Area Committee last night members voted the scheme through.

They agreed to pay £1,500 for anti-graffiti kits from a firm in Glasgow.

A mirror image of the scheme is already running on Humberside.

There, when groups use the kits they have to pay £10 to replenish the contents - despite saving the council money by doing the job themselves.

But in Kirklees the kits will be free.

A report said graffiti was a problem in Kirklees generally, but particularly in the Colne Valley and pockets of the Holme Valley.

The report added that at the moment Kirklees may not remove graffiti for up to two weeks "unless it was of a racist, sexual or offensive nature, in which case it will be removed within 24 hours".
