A disgruntled customer who went to complain to a builder about not completing some work was struck over the head with a table leg, a court heard.

Sohail Akhtar had been contracted by the family of Bandaras Hussain to undertake some work for them at a house and he was said to have been paid but had not finished the job.

He had been contacted and said he was busy and would complete the work at a later date but in November 2013, Mr Hussain went round to Akhtar’s address.

Mehran Nassiri prosecuting told Leeds Crown Court Mr Hussain had two cousins with him but they remained in the vehicle while he knocked on Akhtar’s door.

Akhtar answered and was asked when he was going to finish the work or whether he would pay a refund. He became angry and started to swear at Mr Hussain and shut the door.

Mr Hussain told him he was not going until he got an answer and knocked again on the door. When it was again opened, Akhtar was holding a wooden table leg which he swung at Mr Hussain striking him on the forehead and causing a large cut.

Mr Nassiri said Akhtar then swung the weapon again but the complainant put his arm up to block the blow and with the help of a cousin he managed to restrain Akhtar and take it from him and throw the leg away before they then left.

Mr Hussain went to hospital and had six stitches to the wound on his forehead but was released the same day.

The court heard Akhtar was on bail last year when over four days in August he sent numerous threatening and abusive text messages and voice mails to his former partner.

Chris Moran representing him said he had taken the break-up of their relationship very badly but now felt ashamed of his actions and had stopped contacting her.

Akhtar, 55 of Yews Hill Road, Lockwood, Huddersfield, admitted unlawful wounding and harassment and was jailed for a total of two years.

Recorder Ray Singh said the violence involving the use of a weapon, a chair leg was “unforgiveable”.
