LONGWOOD Amateur Operatic Society delivered their first performance of Godspell last night.

The Broadway favourite – a musical based on biblical parables – runs at the Lawrence Batley Theatre until Saturday and tickets are still available.

Kirsty Haigh, a member of the group since 2004, said: “The show is fantastic. I didn’t know the story, but it is great.

“The scenery is minimal and the group have worked hard to make it more modern.

“The principals have worked very hard since May on this.”

Jesus is played by Dominic Moccia.

The cast is on stage all the time and the pace never slackens.

The foot tapping tempo is due to the innovative direction and choreography of Jayne Davison and Neil Broadbent, working as a team who both have a part in the show where Neil shows a talent for comedy.

The musical direction is in the hands of Caroline Robinson and a small band who are hidden from sight behind the stage but produce the wonderful music.

The stage direction responsible for lighting, sound and special effects is the province of Chris Brearley and his team.

Tickets are available at the door.

Performances will start at 7.15pm apart from Saturday’s matinee which begins at 2.15pm.
