A HEROIN addict stole packs of steak from a town centre store.

Marcus Alexander, of Longwood Gate, Longwood, appeared before Kirklees magistrates yesterday.

He admitted stealing seven packs of steak from Marks & Spencer on March 1.

Paul Ramsay, prosecuting, said that Alexander entered the New Street store at 3.30pm.

He put the meat, worth £60, in his rucksack before leaving the shop.

Security staff followed the 34-year-old and he was detained.

Alexander, who tested positive for heroin, told police he would have sold the meat.

Magistrates heard that Alexander had 42 offences on his record.

Carl Kingsley, prosecuting, said his client’s addiction “permeated” through his list of convictions.

Magistrates adjourned Alexander’s case so that he can be assessed for drugs rehabilitation.

He will now be sentenced on March 27.

Alexander was banned from entering the store as part of his bail conditions.
