Crown green bowlers may not be the fittest of athletes.

But that did not stop them from taking on a marathon of their own.

Bowlers Shaun Irving and Paddy Hynes played an end of bowling at 54 different Huddersfield greens in one day.

The epic day of bowling began at first light - 4am - at Linthwaite and finished 17 hours later at Dalton Cricket and Bowling Club.

The dawn ‘til dusk bowl-athon was the brainchild of Shaun in a bid to raise cash for the Yorkshire Children’s Centre.

Shaun said: “It’s an idea I had while having a joke with Paddy before Christmas.

“He said let’s go for it and we’ve been planning it since then.”

Shaun and Paddy, whose home club is Milnsbridge Liberal, were supported by a four-strong team, including Philip Glehdill who organised and drove a minibus courtesy of Brothers Pearse.

The three others, George Kaye, Ken Wenzel and Dave Hill, helped organise the day and keep the duo going.

With some club’s having more than one green the two bowlers ended up completing a total of 59 ends with Shuan declaring overall victory.

A total of 160 miles were covered driving across the district from Shepley to Slaithwaite and beyond.

Said Shaun: “We were shattered when we finished at about 9.30pm.”

The team hope to have raised £800 for the children’s centre, based at Brian Jackson House in Huddersfield Town centre.
