The Queen Mother was beloved by the nation until her death in 2002, aged 101.

Wife of Prince Albert, Duke of York, and mother to our reigning Queen, Elizabeth II, most will remember Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon as the elderly Queen Mother.

But archive pictures from Kirklees Council have revealed a more youthful, glamorous chapter of her life as Her Royal Highness the Duchess of York.

The images were taken in 1928 during a visit by the Duke and Duchess of York to Batley, where they officially opened extensions to the Batley and District Hospital.

The pictures show the stylish Royal couple walking past the crowds the lined the streets, laying wreaths at the town's war memorial, and receiving bouquets of flowers.

The Duke and Duchess later became King George VI and Queen Elizabeth after King Edward VIII abdicated the throne to marry American divorcee Wallis Simpson.

Their relationship, and the King's struggle with a speech impediment, were dramatised in the Oscar winning film The King's Speech, starring Colin Firth and Helena Bonham Carter as the King and Queen.

Many of these pictures are available to buy from the Kirklees Image Archive - for information on the collection and how to purchase images follow this link
