Drivers have endured another day of motorway misery on the M62.

Two lorries crashed on the busy motorway today causing yet another series of long delays on the motorway and on feeder roads.

Fortunately no-one was injured but the crash caused more than two hours delays for motorists travelling on the westbound carriageway which had to be partly closed for a time.

The crash happened shortly before midday at junction 25 near Brighouse when the lorries collided and a car narrowly avoided the wreckage.

The hard shoulder and lanes one and two were closed on lanes heading towards Manchester with gantry signs diverting motorists to the single operating lane.

One of the HGVs had spilt fuel on the carriageway further adding to the disruption and both lorries were badly damaged and needed recovery assistance from specialist vehicles.

The motorway re-opened at 2.45pm but traffic got off to a slow start and further hampered by a broken down van in the queues.

The crash had a knock-on affect on surrounding routes with queues stretching back more than seven miles to junction 28 at Tingley and also linking to the M621 in Leeds at the Beeston junction.

There were also long delays for traffic who tried to avoid the motorway and jams built up on the A 644 through Brighouse and Mirfield and the A62 through Liversedge and Cooper Bridge.

The crash came just 24 hours after a 61-year-old woman from Bolton was airlifted to hospital after she was critically injured in a crash on the M62 at Brighouse.

She was one of three people travelling in a Toyota Yaris car that is thought to have crashed into the central reservation on the eastbound carriageway just after junction 24 at Ainley Top and overturned.

The Yorkshire Air Ambulance landed on the carriageway after police halted vehicles hundreds of yards away.

She was flown to Leeds General Infirmary and is now in a “stable” condition.

The eastbound carriageway was closed from 1pm until around 6.30pm after the crash.

No other vehicles were involved in the smash, which was a few hundred yards after the entry slip road on the Leeds-bound side.
