A member of a mountain rescue team discovered an old training shell while out walking.

Woodhead Mountain Rescue Team say it was found on the moors around Langsett.

They believe the recent rainfall, which washed peat around, led to the revelation of the lost ordnance from WWII when the area was used for tank practice.

On Facebook the volunteer rescue team said: “As was the case here, when our team member came across this shell, we know what to do in situations like this - call the Army bomb disposal team who can safely dispose of such items.

“If you are around the area and do come across something you feel maybe an explosive device do not touch it. Keep well away, take a grid reference and the report it to the ranger station at Langsett or failing that the police. Under no circumstances pick it up.”
