ALLOTMENT enthusiasts are being offered the chance to pick up free tips.

New and existing plotholders are being invited to take part in a free training session on Saturday, July 23, when an allotments expert comes to Huddersfield.

Weed clearing, soil preparation and organic growing will be some of the issues that expert Susy Feltham, of the Alternative Technology Centre, Hebden Bridge, will be focusing on.

The session will be at the Taylor Hill annex of Huddersfield Technical College.

Clare Christian, of the Environmental Alliance, which is organising the event, said: "I hope new plotholders will benefit from the practical nature of the day.

"I hope the training will encourage people to take up allotments and reduce the number of derelict plots we have in Kirklees."

She said many of Kirklees Council's 1,800 allotment plots were under-used or derelict.

She added that there were health benefits to allotment gardening, including fitness, stress relief and additive-free produce.
