A £50,000 Heritage Lottery grant has led to a new Community Heritage Room being opened at Tolson Museum in Huddersfield.

The first exhibition is Life in Transition and is based around the lives of Kirklees’ South Indian community.

The project has been led by Yorkshire-based organisation Manasamitra and its volunteers, who have worked closely with participants from West Yorkshire.

Throughout the project, participants have shared their personal accounts from the past and present. Their accounts will then be saved for the future in Kirklees’ Sound Archive, also housed at Tolson Museum.

Sound artist Mandeep Samra and composer Daniel Weaver, in collaboration with Impossible Theatre, have brought the women’s stories to life.

A selection of treasured objects from the South Asian community also accompanies this exhibition including dance headdresses, hand-made children’s games, beautiful musical instruments and traditional cooking vessels.
