TODDLERS at a Huddersfield playgroup have been given cash help – to spend a penny.
A funding boost of £11,000 has provided new facilities and eased a problem for young children at Slaithwaite Playgroup.
A grant of £10,000 from the Big Lottery Fund and a further £1,000 from the charity The Constance Green Foundation have enabled Slaithwaite Playgroup and Toddlers (SPLaT) to convert a storage area into toilet facilities attached to the playgroup room.
The playgroup is held at the Community Centre, Bankgate. Previously children had to be escorted from the room to communal facilities in another area of the building.
This was considered generally unsuitable and could lead to accidents.
Playgroup chairman Joanne Gibson, who attended SPLaT as a young girl, said: “There were security issues with children having to use the communal toilets in the building.
“They had to be escorted by staff and it was very inconvenient.
“Having the new children’s toilets attached to the playgroup room has made a massive difference.
“The children can go to the loo independently now.”
Further fundraising efforts by volunteer committee members of SPLaT, has also paid for a facelift to the facilities.
The playgroup room has been redecorated and refurbished and the toddlers’ room has a new floor.
Slaithwaite Playgroup was opened in 1982 and currently has about 50 children aged from two-and-a-half to five on its roll, with a maximum of 20 attending each weekday morning and afternoon during term time.
SPLaT also runs a group for toddlers, from birth to five years old.
