SPEN Valley High School has won £170,903 of Lottery money to help improve sports opportunities across Kirklees.

Volunteer teachers from participating schools will be trained to run activities such as dance, yoga, orienteering, climbing and martial arts.

Classes will be on offer to improve pupils' confidence and social skills.

Jim Taylor, of the school, said: "We are absolutely delighted that the hard work of all the teachers across our partnership has been recognised with this award.

"The funding will have a huge impact on the amount of young people assessing our out-of- school hours learning programmes as well as the range and diversity of activities on offer.

"This will allow us to forge closer links with our communities and create new coaches and leaders, giving communities greater ownership over the learning taking place within them."

The money has been channelled through the Big Lottery Fund, the largest distributor of lottery cash.

It is part of the Fund's £25.5m UK-wide School Sports Co-ordinators Scheme, to motivate young people through physical exercise.
