TRADERS in Lindley are sponsoring a guide dog – after raising more than £5,000 at their Christmas fair.

Now they are looking forward to meeting the puppy, which will be called Lindley, during its training.

Retailers who run the Love Lindley committee promoting trade in the village, raised £3,000 for Guide Dogs for the Blind during the Christmas fair in 2009.

But they were told they could sponsor a guide dog if they were able to raise a further £2,500 – which they achieved at their 2010 Christmas fair.

Committee secretary Lucia Haycock and treasurer Amanda Bates presented the cheque to Stewart Heppleston, chairman of the Huddersfield branch of Guide Dogs for the Blind.

Tony Brice, chairman of the Love Lindley committee, said the Christmas fair had been a huge success.

He thanked Kirklees highways and licensing departments, who arrange for Lidget Street to be closed to traffic during the fair. He also thanked Lindley Working Men’s Club and The Saddle pub for providing rooms for committee meetings and event sponsor Armitage’s Garden Centre.
