A love-struck young man was found walking along the hard shoulder of the M62 near Halifax at 2.30am today apparently on his way to Bedford.

Officers picked the man up who explained he had met a young lady online and was setting off to see her more than 150 miles away.

Chief Inspector Mark Bownass of the Roads Policing Unit, said:

"The man was putting his life at risk by walking along the hard shoulder of what is, even at 2.30 in the morning, a busy road and so we took him away to a place of safety."

A spokeswoman from the Highways Agency said staff provided assistance to police after reports of a pedestrian on the hard shoulder of the M62 in the early hours of the morning.

She said: "Staff at the Regional Control Centre in Wakefield located the pedestrian via CCTV and Highways Agency traffic officers arrived at the scene (Junction 26-27) at approximately 1.40am to ensure the safety of both the pedestrian and motorway users.

"Police removed the pedestrian from the motorway shortly afterwards.
