A Lowerhouses man has appeared in court after crashing his company car into another vehicle.

Matthew Quarmby, of Fanny Moor Lane, pleaded guilty to failing to stop after an accident.

The 27-year-old lost his job with the cleaning firm following the incident.

Kirklees magistrates heard that the smash happened on February 5.

Magistrates heard that Quarmby was working for a cleaning company based at Royd Street in Milnsbridge.

He had use of the firm’s vehicles for cleaning contracts and at the time was in possession of a Land Rover Freelander.

Magistrates were told that at just before 10pm Quarmby started the vehicle, crashing into a stationary Ford Focus belonging to one of his neighbours.

Prosecutor Alex Bozman said that as a result he mounted the pavement and became wedged between the car and the wall.

He said: “He caused damage to both vehicles.

“Then he tried to get out of the vehicle but couldn’t so reversed back onto the road.”

Magistrates were told that Quarmby later returned the car to his company, posting the keys through the door.

Damage to the company car included scratches and dents to both sides, with the wing mirrors left partly detached.

Quarmby was interviewed and said that his foot had slipped on the pedal.

Magistrates heard that he did go round to his neighbour and apologise.

Paul Blanchard, mitigating, said: “There appears to have been a momentary lapse and thereafter a significant amount of panic.

“As a consequence of this incident he had to make an application for benefits so the inevitable did occur.”

Magistrates fined Quarmby £105 and endorsed his licence with eight penalty points.
