A FAMILY escaped unhurt when their caravan overturned and was wrecked in a motorway crash.

The accident happened on the eastbound carriageway of the M62 near Scammonden Dam at 3.10pm yesterday.

The scale of the damage can clearly be seen in the pictures, captured by Examiner reader Steve Fitt.

The caravan finished upside down across two lanes and was left a splintered, shattered mess.

The car stayed upright and was only slightly damaged.

Tailbacks quickly built up, stretching back beyond Junction 22 at Ripponden.

Two lanes of the motorway remained closed for more than two hours as emergency workers cleared away the debris.

The family were on their way to Sheffield at the time of the accident.
