A man wearing a balaclava stormed into his pregnant girlfriend’s house and threatened to kill her.

Luke Kenny jabbed a meat cleaver towards Jodie Luckwell and told her that he would knife a police officer if she called for help.

He was caught after his rantings were heard by a 999 operator on a phone Miss Luckwell had hidden behind a sofa.

Yesterday the 25-year-old admitted a charge of making a threat to kill when he appeared before Kirklees magistrates in custody.

He will be sentenced by a crown court judge next month.

Catherine Pitters, prosecuting, said that the incident happened at Miss Luckwell’s Dalton home.

At the time Kenny was on court bail after assaulting five months pregnant Miss Luckwell with a wok.

Mrs Pitters said that on October 16 Kenny, of no fixed address, went round to her property on Dyson Street at 8pm.

He knocked on the door and when she allowed him in she noticed that he was wearing a balaclava.

At the time Miss Luckwell’s two-year-old daughter was asleep upstairs, magistrates were told.

Mrs Pitters said: “He was very upset as he entered the lounge.

“He seemed angry and agitated and (she said) it was as though he wasn’t in control of himself.

“Then he entered the kitchen and picked up a meat cleaver and paced around the room making threats to Jodie.”

In a panic Miss Luckwell tried to phone police but Kenny snatched her mobile from her and threw it away.

But while he was distracted, she dialled 999 from the house phone and threw the phone behind the sofa so Kenny wouldn’t notice it.

The operator then heard him telling her: “I told you not to **** with me, I’ll do your mum as well.”

Mrs Pitters said: “He was irate as he was jabbing the meat cleaver towards her.

“He was heard saying: ‘You are going to sit there and be quiet’ and: ‘I’ll kill you’.

“She giggled nervously and he said: ‘Don’t laugh at me or I’ll cut your lips off.’

Magistrates were told that frightened Miss Luckwell seriously believed that he was going to carry out these threats.

Mrs Pitters said: “He said he would put a meat cleaver in the officer’s head should police arrive.”

When police arrived Kenny fled from an upstairs window, leaving behind the meat cleaver and balaclava.

However, later that night he handed himself in and made a full confession.

Kenny’s solicitor Sonia Kidd told magistrates that it was clear that their sentencing powers would not be sufficient.

The Huddersfield bench committed Kenny to Leeds Crown Court for sentence, where he will appear on November 15.

He was remanded in custody.
