THE M62 above Huddersfield was closed after a man threatened to jump off a bridge.

The 49-year-old man was discovered on Scammonden Bridge, clinging on to the wrong side of the railings at 8.30pm last night.

Trained police negotiators were called to the scene and the motorway was closed in both directions between junction 22 at Ripponden and junction 24 at Ainley Top.

This picture was taken by Paul Chan at about 10.30pm from the bridge at junction 23 at Outlane.

A police spokesman said: "We had to close the motorway as a safety precaution because the man was threatening to jump.

"It is very rare the motorway has to be closed like this, but safety is a top priority."

The man clambered back to safety shortly before 10.45pm and the motorway was reopened.

The 49-year-old man lives in Sowerby Bridge. Police were talking to him today.
