A man has died after a police pursuit through West Yorkshire.

At around 2.45am on Monday morning (December 18) a silver Audi A4 was sighted on Stoney Ridge Road in the Heaton area of Bradford and failed to stop for officers.

A pursuit commenced and the Audi collided with a barrier on the M606, close to the junction of the M62 westbound, a short time later.

The driver of the Audi, a man in his thirties was pronounced deceased at the scene. His family have been informed.

A road closure remains in place as investigations continue.

West Yorkshire Police says due to the circumstances an immediate referral has been made to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

The M606 and M62 at Junction 26 were closed while emergency services worked on the scene of the crash, which was on the fast link road from the M606 southbound heading onto the M62 westbound.

IPCC statement

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has issued a statement about the M606 incident:

We have begun an independent investigation into a fatal road traffic incident at around 3am today (Monday) following a police pursuit in Bradford this morning.

The driver of an Audi vehicle died at the scene on the M606 southbound at the junction with the M62.

After being notified by West Yorkshire Police, we have deployed investigators to the incident and the police post incident procedures.

Police investigation work was completed at 12:50.

Barrier repairs are currently being made to the M606 where the accident occurred on the fast link road from the M606 southbound heading onto the M62 westbound which remains closed.

No time has been set for the M606 slip road to re-open but work is ongoing.

Police investigation work on the M606 has now been completed.

Highways teams say assessments to the damage of the barrier can now be arranged.

The exit slip road to the M62 Westbound remains closed due to barrier repairs and earlier accident, where a man in his 30s had died.

Update on M606 road closure

Highway England have said the M606 southbound fast slip to the M62 at Junction 26 westbound remains clsoed for on-going police works.

They say: “Once completed we have a large amount of safety barrier to repair. Link likely to be closed for several hours yet.

“Traffic towards M62 is advised to utilise the roundabout.”

IPCC investigating

The fatal crash has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), which oversees the police complaints system in England and Wales.

As West Yorkshire Police officers were involved in a pursuit with the driver over a fail to stop, the IPCC carries out the investigation to avoid any conflict of interest at West Yorkshire Police.

Potential 8 mile pursuit

Police have confirmed that the pursuit started on Stoney Ridge Road in the Heaton area of Bradford.

They tried to get the Audi to stop when it collided with a barrier on the M606, close to the junction of the M62 westbound, at 2.45am this morning.

The distance between the two points is around eight miles.

Highways England say the M606 remains closed for “extensive police investigation work and carriageway cleanup.”

The M606 remains closed between J3 Bradford and the M62 junction while police continue at scene.

Due to volume of traffic on local roads avoiding the M62 there are delays on the buses.

Severe delays continue

Highways England say travel time is around 1 hour 30 minutes.

It means it may take that long for the current delays to clear and traffic to be moving as normal.

M62 re-open but delays continue

Highways England have just confirmed that the M62 at J26 has re-opened.

It had been closed when debris from a serious incident on the M606 fell onto the M62 carriageway.

The M606 remains closed.

Two cars involved

There were two vehicles involved between J3 A6036 Rooley Avenue / A6177 Rooley Lane / Staithgate Lane (Staygate Roundabout) and the M62 J26 / A58 Whitehall Road / A638 Bradford Road (Chain Bar).
The road is closed due to a serious accident on the link road from the M606 southbound heading onto the M62 westbound.

The M62 is also closed at J26 with traffic diverting via the slip roads.

Both roads will likely remain closed through morning rush hour.

3am incident

The crash happens just before 3am this morning and they predict the M606 south and M62 at J26 will remain closed for the morning commute.

Emergency services on scene

Highways England say the M62 westbound is also closed with traffic being diverted via exit + entry slip roads.

They say: “Were working with emergency services on scene to get road open as soon as safe to do so. Please plan ahead .”

There are severe delays on the M62 westbound this morning.

Anyone travelling around the Bradford area will be affected.

There was a serious collision on the M606 but debris has ended up on the M62 westbound around J26 of the M62.
