The M62 was closed this morning after a person fell from a bridge onto the motorway.

The westbound carriageway was shut near junction 26 at Chain Bar after a person fell from a bridge near the A58 Whitehall Road, at Cleckheaton.

Police were called to the scene at 10.17am and the carriageway remained closed until noon.

Traffic backed up to junction 28 at Tingley.

The eastbound carriageway was also closed so the Air Ambulance could land and ferry the injured person to hospital, police said.

Traffic on the eastbound carriageway was slow as drivers braked to look at the scene.

The A58, at Cleckheaton, and A62 Leeds Road, at Mirfield, became gridlocked as traffic was diverted off the motorway.

Updates to follow.
