A motorist drove the WRONG WAY on the M62 last night causing a serious collision.

Three vehicles were struck when it is believed a Vauxhall car drove out of the entrance to Hartshead Services and travelled east on the Westbound carriageway before colliding with the head-on traffic.

One of the vehicles hit by the Vauxhall driven by a man was an Audi A1 which caused the female driver of that car to become trapped in her vehicle.

Fire crews from Elland , Brighouse and Cleckheaton were called to the scene and assisted in releasing the woman from the vehicle.

She was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Police were on the scene and closed all four lanes of the westbound carriageway following the crash at 9.03pm.

The driver of the Vauxhall suffered minor injuries and no-others involved in the collision were hurt.

Road traffic police officers diverted motorway traffic due to the crash which caused major disruption throughout the late evening.

An investigation will now be carried out and anyone who witnessed the collision should contact police on 101.
