Thousands of drivers were caught up in motorway congestion near Huddersfield.

They were on the M62 when it was closed yesterday after a pile-up.

The crash involving three cars forced the closure of part of the M62 in Greater Manchester and that meant queues stretching back past Junction 22 at Rishworth Moor, towards Outlane.

Three people were taken to hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening, a Highways Agency spokesman said.

One woman had to be cut from her vehicle by firefighters, the fire service said.

The westbound carriageway was shut between Rochdale and Heywood at 8am but re-opened two hours later.

Drivers also faced problems on the exit slip road eastbound at junction 24 Ainley Top which was also closed because of an accident yesterday. No-one was badly hurt.
