M62: Eastbound carriageways shut after fireball engulfs lorry in between junction 26 and 27

Delays are still expected for those travelling towards Leeds

A fireball shut down the M62 at rush hour.

Miraculously, no one was hurt in the fierce blaze which engulfed a lorry and left thousands of commuters trapped for hours this morning.

The accident took place between junction 26 at Chain Bar and junction 27 at Gildersome at 6.45am and forced West Yorkshire Police to close the entire eastbound side of the motorway for two hours while firefighters fought the flames and thick smoke.

Four fire engines from Cleckheaton and other stations raced to the scene to dampen the fire, while a diversion route was eventually set up for the motorway traffic via the A58 and A650 at around 8am.

Police were finally able to re-open the outside lanes and then later all were passable.

But large delays are still expected due to the amount of traffic that had built up on the motorway and the continued rush hour traffic.

Traffic on the westbound carriageway was also disrupted with thick smoke pouring across the motorway.
