THOUSANDS of drivers were caught up in chaos on the M62.

The drivers were stuck in huge traffic jams, caused by an accident at Scammonden.

But police also had problems on the other carriageway, as drivers slowed down to look at the accident.

Their “rubber necking” actions caused another huge tailback.

The M62 eastbound carriageway near Junction 22 at Windy Hill was closed yesterday morning, prompting misery for thousands of commuters.

The shutdown was caused by a three-car collision between Junction 22 and Junction 23 at Outlane just after 7am.

The situation had been made worse by an earlier lane closure and slow traffic earlier that morning.

Huddersfield Traffic police said there were no serious injuries but the impact of the incident was massive, as cars ground to a halt.

Although there was no accident on the westbound carriageway the subsequent slowing down of the traffic to look at the problems also resulted in delays.

At one point, traffic queues stretched back to Junction 25 at Brighouse – more than six miles – with all three lanes almost at a standstill.

Traffic jams on the eastbound lanes stretched back more than four miles.

A police spokesman said: “As often happens in these situations there was a certain amount of ‘rubber-necking’ which didn’t help.

“It was not clear whether some of the heavy traffic was in the lead up to Manchester but it was very heavily congested.”

Traffic was moving again by 11am.
