Sections of the M62 remain closed overnight following an accident involving a lorry driver in an HGV carrying 44 tonnes of butter.

The lorry smashed through the central reservation near to junction 21, Milnrow and collided with a van, a car and two other lorries on the opposite carriageway. The driver has been airlifted to hospital and is in a critical condition.

One lane eastbound has since reopened with one lane running past the scene - but all westbound carriageways were still closed at 11pm for overnight resurfacing.

Part of the central reservation was being repaired following the accident.

Motorway police were asking drivers passing the scene to concentrate on the road ahead and not the recovery operation.

Diversions were put in place causing major delays on all trans-Pennine routes.

Westbound traffic was queueing back to junction 25 at Brighouse for much of the day.
