TRAFFIC on the M62 Eastbound was at a standstill this afternoon following a pile-up.

Two lanes were closed between Junction 26 Chain Bar and Junction 27 Gildersome after a crash between an HGV and four cars. Queues were backed up as far as Junction 24 Huddersfield and two lanes were closed. A Highways Agency spokesman said: “We received the call about 11.10am.

“The accident was within the managed motorway scheme, which meant there was no hard shoulder –  as this is being transformed in to a running lane. “This was an added complication.” He said that there had been five complaints of minor injury however none were thought to be serious:  “At 12.30pm police  confirmed there was no need to investigate further.”

Special Recovery were called in to assist and the lanes were reopened at 1pm. Delays were expected to last until 3.30pm yesterday. At 12.30pm, Dave Walsh, said via Twitter that he had been “crawling  for 40 minutes” between Hartshead Moor Services and Junction 26 – the M606 turnoff. Tony Watkins, of Halifax warned  drivers “M62 east at total standstill  at Brighouse and as far as can be seen. Keep clear.”
