A Holmfirth woman was seriously injured after a driver headed down the M62 the wrong way last night causing a pile-up which shut the motorway.

A Vauxhall Zafira was driven eastbound along the westbound carriageway having left Hartshead Service Station by the entry slip road.

There was then a collision between it and an Audi A1 and a Ford Kuga which were travelling westbound.

The Audi was being driven by a Holmfirth woman , 40, and it is believed the Zafira smashed head on into the vehicle.

The female driver needed to be freed by fire crews.

Debris from that crash then spun into the road and caused damage to a Mini Cooper and Audi A5.

Both the driver of the Vauxhall and the Holmfirth woman suffered serious, though not life-threatening, injuries.

They were both take to Leeds General Infirmary.

The westbound section of the motorway was closed shortly after the 9pm crash between junctions 25 and 26, with the slip road from the M606 onto that motorway also closed.

The road reopened at 3.20am this morning.

An investigation will now be carried out and anyone who witnessed the collision should contact police on 101.
