Magistrates have invoked new law to crack down on unruly behaviour in Meltham.

An application was made to Kirklees Magistrates Court for a closure order on a flat in the village after repeated complaints about anti-social behaviour.

The flat is owned and let by Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing.

The order was granted by the court after the application on behalf of the Kirklees Anti-Social Behaviour Partnership, which includes Kirklees Council, Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing and police.

It was the first time that Kirklees has used the new legislation, which came into force earlier this year.

The order prevents anyone other than the person living there and named others entering the flat.

The legislation consolidates existing closure powers relating to licensed and non-licensed premises which are causing, or are likely to cause, anti-social behaviour.

Local residents had made several complaints to the council.

Clr Peter O’Neill, Kirklees Council, Cabinet Member for Communities said: “Kirklees is one of the first areas in the country to have made an application of this kind.

“It’s important that local people who cause disruption to the lives of others are given a strong message that this kind of disrespectful behaviour will not be tolerated.

“The partnership has used these new powers creatively to help solve residents problem quickly and effectively. It’s reassuring to know that measures are in place but more important action is being taken.”
