EIGHTY singers, musicians and actors have gathered together on stage for the premier of a new musical.
Huddersfield’s Methodist Circuit of churches performed the first of three Two Sisters and a Funeral shows.
It’s a new musical written by Roger Jones about the raising of Lazarus – his funeral and sisters Martha and Mary – and it’s the first time it has been performed in Huddersfield.
Members of local Methodist churches from Kirkheaton to Slaithwaite took part – the youngest aged 11 and the oldest in their 80s.
Conductor Naomi Sharp said: “There are members of around 10 Huddersfield churches taking part and it has been quite a challenge bringing everyone together, but one which they’ve been really passionate about.
“In total there’s 80 people involved – 50 in the choir, a dozen in the orchestra and 15 or so performing and more helping out backstage.
“Some people have experience of performing, others none, but they’ve all been so enthusiastic about being involved which has made it easier to co-ordinate everyone.”
The first show yesterday at Providence Methodist Church in Golcar was a huge success.
There will be two further shows next Saturday, November 24, at Gledholt Methodist Church at 7pm and the final one next Sunday, at Almondbury Methodist Church.
Naomi is a former music student and after university she went as a missionary to Cambodia and taught music there.
But this is the first time she’s taken up the baton in seven years.
“I didn’t even have a baton until September,” she added. “I was persuaded back into it and although it’s nerve-wracking, I’m really enjoying it.
“We’ve brought people together from Almondbury, Dalton, Kirkheaton, Lindley, Slaithwaite – the list goes on – so it has been quite an achievement.”
Huddersfield Methodist Circuit only came into being 12 months ago and though churches have put on musical productions in the past, this is the first time they have had a joint effort across all the Methodist churches in the town.
Concert admission is free with a collection in support of Action for Children and Huddersfield Methodist Mission.
