A man has been arrested following the huge fire at the former Majestyk nightclub in Leeds last night.

Police said the 32-year-old was taken into custody after witnesses made reports of a man behaving suspiciously around the time the fire was spotted, at 7.20pm last night.

Road diversions are still in place around City Square.

At its height 75 firefighters, including crews from Huddersfield,  tackled the fire at the Grade II listed building , which was empty.

Ten fire engines attended the scene and crews used three aerial appliances to douse the flames.

Despite the determined efforts of firefighters, the blaze spread across the dome roof of the notorious  landmark building, making it unsafe for crews to enter.

Fortunately nobody was inside the building when the fire broke out, at 7.20pm, and there have been no  persons involved or injured.

Emergency services worked alongside Leeds City Council Emergency Planning Team as well as other agencies.

The city centre area was locked down to allow access to the building and three nearby hotels were evacuated as a precaution.

Assistant Chief Officer Dave Walton said: “The fire was largely under control by around midnight, however, crews have been in attendance overnight and four appliances remain at the scene this morning as the remaining pockets of fire are extinguished.

“Our crews have worked fantastically hard to tackle this serious fire and I would like to thank them for their tireless efforts.

“This has been a massive multi-agency effort by all partners involved.

“Although the building is extensively damaged, it is still standing and we are hopeful that this Grade II listed building can be restored to its former glory in time.

“The building is a significant landmark in Leeds and many people have fond memories of its history.”

The fire brigade anticipate being at the scene for the entirety of today and possibly longer. A full fire investigation is underway into the cause of the fire.
