Huddersfield Royal Infirmary is to have its car park re-surfaced to improve facilities for patients, visitors and staff.

And the improvements will culminate with the unveiling of a new glass atrium reception area, the first facelift for the main entrance since the 1960s.

But hospital chiefs have reassured visitors and drivers that the new car park will not mean higher charges.

The stone used in the construction of the new reception is designed to blend with existing buildings and the exterior will be illuminated at night with new lights.

The re-surfacing work will start on Monday February 3) on North Drive, which runs down from Acre Street to A&E, through the site and on to Occupation Road. It will last between three and five days.

But while traffic will be reduced to one lane of the drive it will stay open at all times to ensure access to A&E for ambulances and patients and their families.

Work on the main hospital car park starts on February 10 and is expected to last a week.

Director of planning, performance, estates and facilities at the hospital, Lesley Hill said: “We are transforming the environment and facilities at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary to improve it for our patients and their families.

“We aim to keep disruption to a minimum throughout.”

“The work will be done in two stages to help achieve this..”

During the work, new signage will be put in place to redirect patients and visitors to parking spaces on the new Acre Mills complex across the road from the main hospital building.

The main entrance drop-off points and spaces for blue badge holders at the hospital entrance will be maintained as usual throughout.the work.
