Transport chiefs are tomorrow expected to give the green light to a near £3m package of improvements across West Yorkshire.

The project is expected to include major roadworks at sites in Huddersfield and Halifax, to ease traffic jams, and improvements to the railway stations in both towns.

Councillors on the West Yorkshire Integrated Transport Authority are being asked to approve £2.7m of funding to get 29 transport schemes underway at a meeting tomorrow.

Covering the five West Yorkshire districts and York, the schemes have been developed under the £1bn West Yorkshire ‘plus’ Transport Fund proposals and could be ready by 2015.

Projects include:

Improvements to the A629 Halifax – Huddersfield corridor and Salterhebble junction

An upgrade of the Cooper Bridge junction

Extra parking at rail stations

Metro chairman Clr James Lewis said: “All of the schemes in this report have been developed to meet the West Yorkshire Transport plus Fund’s key aims of enhancing connectivity generating additional economic investment and creating jobs.

“If approved by my ITA Executive Board colleagues on Friday, preparatory and consultation work can begin to make this package of ‘early win’, ground-breaking transport developments ready for delivery in 2015.”

Finance for the schemes will come from the funds currently being held by the ITA to support the progress of work ahead of the creation of the West Yorkshire Combined Authority in 2014.

The Government have allocated millions of pounds to the regions to improve transport infrastructure.

News that the Cooper Bridge scheme is included will be welcomed by thousands of drivers.
