A COUPLE who lost their baby son at just five days old are raising funds for a Huddersfield hospice in his memory.

Marie and Marek Laskowski, of Denby Dale, are celebrating the brief life of little Tomek by raising money for the West Yorkshire Forget Me Not Trust, which supported the family in the days following his birth.

And a group of friends, colleagues and well-wishers will help to swell the coffers by taking part in a coast-to-coast cycle ride on Saturday .

Money for Miles – Celebrating Tomek’s Memory is being led by Joe Formisano, sales director at Huddersfield-based nursery products firm Mamas & Papas, where Marie and Marek both work.

The company has the hospice as its chosen charity.

A group of 18 cyclists – of various experience – aim to cycle 153 miles from Liverpool to Hull in 48 hours.

Those taking part include Tom Ellis, of Aspley-based Ellis Furniture; Sandro Bevilacqua, of Continental Wines and Food Ltd, of Leeds Road, Deighton; and Sean Jarvis, commercial director of Huddersfield Town.

Peter Branson, chief executive of The Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice in Brackenhall, is also taking part in the challenge.

He said: “This ride will be a significant challenge for everyone who has chosen to take part. Sadly, however, every day children and families face their own massive challenges, but they have no choice.

“At Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice we will do anything possible to take some of that burden from the children and families.

“Events like this are immensely important in ensuring we can afford to keep providing that support.

“I am exceptionally grateful for the support of Mamas & Papas and all the committed riders taking part and it’s an honour to be riding with such great people.”

Tomek’s parents have shared their story on the team Just Giving page – www.justgiving.com/Tomek-Laskowski – where people can pledge their support.

Marie will be taking part in in-store events along the route – as staff at five Mamas & Papas stores take part by cycling on static bikes.
