A man has died and another left seriously injured in a tragic accident in Elland.

The BMW car they were in crashed off Calderdale Way through a tree-lined banking and landed on a sliproad below at 1.15am today.

The 21-year-old man driver died and another man, aged 24, who was the front seat passenger, was left with serious injuries and is in a critical but stable condition in hospital.

Two other males, both 18, are being treated in hospital for what are thought to be minor injuries.

Detective Sergeant Carole Greaves of the Major Collision Enquiry Team, said: “Enquiries are ongoing into what has clearly been a very serious incident and we are appealing for anyone who saw the collision or the events leading up to it.

“We would also like to speak with anyone who saw the BMW in the moments leading up to the incident.

“Extensive enquiries remain ongoing today and anyone who has information should contact the Major Collison Enquiry Team on 101.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the tragic death of one of the people in the car.

They said: “At 01:26 hours we attended a fatal road traffic collision in Huddersfield Road, Elland.

“Three fire engines were sent to the scene. This incident involved four casualties – one of which was extricated (cut free) from the vehicle and transported to hospital via ambulance. Sadly, another casualty proved fatal.”

Police were at the scene of the incident from 1.15am and closed the bypass and sliproad off for almost nine hours.

Firefighters attended the incident during their 24 hour walk out.

Three engines attended, two were crewed by 10 non-striking fully qualified fire officers and the other was crewed by Community Response Operatives and supervised by a qualified officer.

In addition to the Elland tragedy, there have been two more tragic deaths on West Yorkshire roads this week - a motorcycle rider was killed in an incident in Keighley, while a six-year-old girl died after being hit by a car in Bradford.

Superintendent Pat Casserly is urging people to take extra care: “It is an awful event when people die in road collisions.

“Over the past 24 hours three people have died as a result of collisions on the roads of West Yorkshire.

“Whilst there have been reductions in the number of people who are killed and seriously injured in road collisions over recent years, the human tragedy of the deaths is not diminished.

“The risks of death and injury are greatly increased with high speed and dangerous driving, but there are also other less obvious risks that people using roads need to address.

“We understandably take the road network for granted and therefore are at risk of complacency lulling us into danger. Please, be attentive in your use of the roads, protect yourself and don’t expose your loved ones to the distress of bereavement.”
