A Huddersfield man has died in a horror crash on the M62.

He was killed when his car veered off the motorway and hit a lamp-post.

And two people were in hospital last night after a serious motorcycle crash in Slaithwaite, which shut a main road for several hours.

The motorway tragedy happened at Brighouse in the early hours of Saturday morning.

A 58-year-old Huddersfield man, who has not yet been named, was driving a Renault Megane on the slip road off junction 25 of the westbound M62 when it left the road and crashed into the lamppost at around 2.20 am.

The driver, the only occupant, was declared dead at the scene.

Police are appealing for any witnesses who may have seen the car prior to the collision when it was travelling on the M606 from Bradford towards the M62.

They also want to hear from any motorists travelling on the opposite carriageway of the M62 to the collision between Bradford and Brighouse who may have seen the Megane.

The crash in Slaithwaite happened on Sunday at 1am when a motorcyclist and his passenger were seriously injured in a crash on Manchester Road.

The rider was trapped between a metal wire fence and a stone wall and was freed by fire crews from Huddersfield. Both casualties were taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.

Huddersfield Fire Brigade Watch Commander Andy Thornes said: “Both rider and passenger had suffered serious injuries and police and ambulance were already at the scene on our arrival.

“The rider had become trapped between a wire metal fence and a stone wall and we used an electric saw to release him from the wreckage. He was trapped for around 30 minutes.”

Police closed Manchester Road between Ned Lane and Back o’Dam for several hours while they investigated the crash.

Any witnesses or anyone with information to either of the incidents should contact police via 101.
