AN 83-year-old man has died in a road tragedy in Huddersfield town centre.

The man suffered severe head injuries when he was in an accident with a single-decker bus on Westgate at 1.15pm yesterday.

He was crossing the road at the traffic lights outside The Crown pub when the tragedy happened at the junction with New North Parade.

The man comes from Brighouse and died at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary at 7.30am today.

He has not yet been named.

The bus windscreen was badly cracked by the impact at the driver's side.

Pc Andy Smith, of Huddersfield traffic police, said: "We have spoken to several witnesses who saw what happened.

"But if anyone saw the accident and has not talked to us we would urge them to get in contact.

"A nurse was one of the first at the scene and she gave the man first aid until paramedics arrived."

The road was sealed off while accident investigation experts tried to put together a picture of what happened.

* A 23-year-old Brighouse woman badly hurt in a road accident in Halifax remains critically ill in hospital.

She was driving a VW Golf car which crashed into a wall at the junction of Bird Cage Lane and Kensington Road in Savile Park at 8pm on Saturday.

She was taken to Calderdale Royal Hospital and later transferred to Leeds General Infirmary.
