A man walked into a Batley nightspot with a knife and claimed: ‘I’ve just stabbed somebody’.

Lee Cass, of no fixed address, admitted to the frightening episode at Le Choix Bar late on Saturday night.

He pleaded guilty to charges of possession of a knife in public and possession of cannabis.

Sarah Marsh, prosecuting, told Kirklees Magistrates’ Court that Cass was recognised upon entering the bar as being involved in some trouble there the previous night.

Because of this the 24-year-old was asked to leave the Bradford Road premises.

Miss Marsh said: “The defendant refused and told the witness: ‘I’ve got a knife and I’ve just stabbed someone’.

“He then revealed tucked into the waistband of his jeans a metal handle.

“The witness grabbed him to restrain him and escorted him outside.”

The court heard that as police arrested Cass the kitchen knife fell to the floor beside him.

He was found with a small amount of cannabis after being transported to Huddersfield Police Station.

The court heard that Cass has previous convictions for attempted robbery and wounding, for which he was sentenced to 64 months in jail.

He has since been recalled to prison after breaching the terms of his prison licence.

Simon Lindley, mitigating, said that his client had received threats and was carrying the knife because he was fearful for his own safety.

District Judge Michael Hopkinson committed Cass for sentencing to Leeds Crown Court on July 4.

He told him: “I am satisfied that this offence was committed in dangerous circumstances.”
