A man has been arrested following a suspected arson attack in Lockwood.

The emergency services were called to a house on Upper Mount Street at 11.45pm last night where firefighters discovered four seats of fire inside the back to back terraced property.

Huddersfield’s Green Watch reported the incident to police, believing it to be malicious, and officers launched an investigation.

A West Yorkshire Police spokeswoman this morning confirmed: “The fire service called for police assistance at 12.11am believing it to be malicious ignition.

“There was no-one inside the property at the time but one male has been arrested and enquiries are progressing.”

Firefighters from Huddersfield’s Green Watch entered the property to tackle the flames and they discovered four separate seats of fires on the upper floor of the property.

They had to wear breathing apparatus to enter the house and put out the flames and then used a high-pressure fan to extract smoke from the house.

They were at the scene for an hour and a half and say no-one was injured in the incident.

In an unconnected incident, an arsonist set fire to items in the gardens of three houses on Bradford Road at Fartown in the early hours of this morning.

Firefighters from Huddersfield’s Green Watch were called initially at 1.45am when a mattress left in the garden of a house had been set on fire. They dealt with the incident but as soon as they left the scene, a second call came in that a wheelie bin had been set alight on the same road.

In total there were three fires in the rear gardens of houses on Bradford Road, between the town centre and the junction at Fartown Bar.
